Onychomycosis in your toenails is a fungal infection that involves any component of the nail unit, including the matrix, bed, or plate. The disease can have certain negative consequences for patients, such as discomfort, pain, and can potentially undermine work and social lives as well as affect the quality of life. Most cutaneous infections are from group known as dermatophytes. The dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum is the major cause of tinea pedis and onychomycosis. Dermatophytoses of the toenails, are particularly difficult to eradicate with drug treatment compare to other sites of the body. The reason behind this is factors that make the nail—the hard, protective nail plate, pathogens between the nail bed and plate along with slow growth of the nail. The early pharmacologic agents had a poor efficacy rate in treating onychomycosis.
So how do we eliminate toenail fungus?
In the Recent years there’s been a new generation of antifungal drugs that produce impressive, long-lasting cure rates with shorter treatment times and better safety margins. In a 2018 study published in the journal: Lasers in Medical Science: the success rate was 87.3%, and this was in patients with a higher severity than previous studies. Laser therapy works by the focused light penetrating the nail and destroying the fungal colon.
